Lack of Shakespeare Festival this year.
The 30th Shakespeare Festival in Neuss, scheduled to open with a new production of Romeo and Juliet in the Globe Theater, has been postponed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Organised by the Kulturamt Neuss (Neuss Cultural Office), the festival has fallen victim to the stringent regulations set by the federal and state commission, as well as the Infection Protection Act (IfSG). According to these regulations, major events are prohibited until August 31, 2020, and the operation of theaters, opera houses, and concert halls is banned.
Under the current circumstances, outdoor catering, a fixed part of the festival, is not feasible. The construction, narrowness, and limited ventilation options of the Globe Theater make it difficult to ensure social distancing or effective measures to prevent possible infection.
Despite the disappointing turn of events, the Shakespeare team remains optimistic and plans to reschedule the festival for June 2021. To stay updated on the latest developments, subscribe to our free newsletter.
