"While others simply aimed to replicate the success of FIFA or Rocket League, the developers of Rematch chose a different path. However, their years of planning for a football game rather than a safe bet proved to be a fatal decision."

Unleashing the Unexpected: Rematch, a Football Game that Bucks Traditional Norms

In an unusual twist, the critically-acclaimed football game, Rematch, wasn't planned as a follow-up to its developers' previous game unexpectedly. In an exclusive interview with Edge, creative director Pierre Tarno spilled the beans on this unconventional decision.

"To tell you the truth, the idea for Rematch sprang into action many moons before Sifu hit the shelves," Tarno admitted. For those who aren't acquainted with Sloclap's back catalog, Sifu is an action game featuring a unique aging system, and it became a hit with one million sales in its debut month. An obvious successor to Absolver, another kung-fu game, Rematch was in the works long before Sifu released.

"Rematch wasn't a result of 'Sifu did well; what's next?' sort of discussion," Tarno explains. In fact, a small team was already prototype-ing Rematch nearly a year before Sifu graced the screens of eager gamers. The history of Rematch goes even further back than that. Tarno initially pitched the idea for Rematch following the completion of Absolver in 2021. Back then, Sloclap was simply too small to manage two simultaneous projects, so the project that would eventually become Rematch was placed on the backburner.

Despite their differences in theme, Rematch remains Sloclap's next project after Sifu. Why, you ask? "Chasing the safe bets is a recipe for disaster," Tarno contends, emphasizing the search for fresh, original experiences among gamers.

Comparing Rematch to industry giants such as FIFA and Rocket League, Tarno critiques FIFA for being "disconnected" from the actual experience of playing football. He asserts that instead of mimicking traditional, formulaic gameplay, Rematch aims to offer an authentic "football player simulator" that focuses on the physicality of the game—specifically, the body contact and ball circulation—in a fluid, personal way.

For creators like Tarno, steering clear of copycats is paramount for breaking new ground in the gaming industry. So, if you're looking for a football game that truly encapsulates the thrill, tension, and chaos of a real-life match, Rematch is the ultimate contender. [1] The creative director of Rematch, a revolutionary football game, revealed in an exclusive interview with Edge that the idea for Rematch was conceived before their successful action game, Sifu, was even released.[2] In the interview, Pierre Tarno explained that Rematch was not a direct consequence of Sifu's success but rather a project that had been in the works since 2021, coinciding with the completion of Sloclap's action game, Absolver.[3] The development team at Sloclap chose to focus on Rematch, straying from the traditional formulaic gameplay often associated with football games such as FIFA, aiming instead to create an "authentic football player simulator".[4] In a bid to offer a fresh, original gaming experience, Sloclap emphasized the physicality of the game, focusing on body contact and ball circulation in a fluid, personal way. This approach sets Rematch apart from popular football games on the market, including Rocket League and FIFA.[5] With a focus on authenticity and a departure from traditional norms, Rematch promises to offer an unparalleled football gaming experience for those seeking more than the glitz of mainstream football games.
