Cult Monster Labubu Set to Hit the Big Screen - Labubu leaps from blind boxes to the big screen in Sony-Pop Mart film deal
Pop Mart is teaming up with Sony Pictures to turn its hit character Labubu into a live-action and animated film. The project marks a major step in expanding the brand's global reach. Directed by Paul King, the movie will bring the quirky, beloved monsters to the big screen for the first time.
Labubu was created by artist Kasing Lung as part of The Monsters series. The plush and collectible figures, known for their odd yet charming designs, quickly became a sensation. Their popularity surged further thanks to influencers on TikTok and Instagram, turning them into a worldwide craze.
The figures are often sold in blind boxes, adding to their appeal. Since their launch, Labubu's success has grown steadily, with high demand across Asia—including Shanghai, Taipei, and Hong Kong. Now, the brand is making waves in Europe, with a 10-year anniversary exhibition set for Paris from March 4 to 29, 2026, at Hôtel du Grand Veneur.
Pop Mart has called the film collaboration a 'major milestone.' Paul King, known for his work on family-friendly films, will direct and co-write the screenplay with Steven Levenson. He will also produce the project. While details remain under wraps, the movie will mix live-action with computer animation. No release date has been announced yet.
The Labubu film represents a bold move for Pop Mart as it pushes deeper into entertainment. With a strong fanbase and a creative team in place, the project could further cement the brand's place in pop culture. The Paris exhibition and ongoing global demand suggest the character's influence is only growing.
