Labor Unions triumph in September 18th action, sending a clear signal to the administration
Mass Protests Sweep Across France Over Budgetary Measures
On September 18, 2020, France witnessed a significant display of public discontent as protests against budgetary measures announced by François Bayrou took place across the country. The demonstrations, which saw the participation of healthcare workers, railway workers, students, and various other groups, were marked by a strong mobilization in Paris.
According to unions, over a million people participated in the protests, while the police reported 500,000. The reform of retirement was a key concern for the protesters, who expressed anger at the government's perceived lack of responsiveness to the people's needs and the austerity policy.
The procession in Paris was set to the rhythm of drums, with protesters lamenting that President Macron does not listen to the people. A young man even called for Macron to resign or be removed by the National Assembly. Attempts at blocking were made before the processions, such as in front of a bus depot in the east of Paris, but the police intervened quickly to prevent such actions.
Symbolic actions were also observed during the morning, with protesters sneaking into the Ministry of the Economy. The unions, including the CGT and the CFDT, claim success from the demonstrations and expect concessions from the Prime Minister. Sophie Binet, general secretary of the CGT, stated that the Prime Minister could announce concessions as early as this evening, while Marylise Léon, general secretary of the CFDT, emphasized the issue of social justice and sharing the efforts.
In Nantes (Loire-Atlantique), Émilie, a territorial agent, participated in the demonstration for the first time. The inter-union has warned that if the social demands are not heard tonight, new demonstrations may take place.
The head of state, Macron, was a target of criticism throughout the day, with protesters expressing their discontent and calling for change. The protests, which mobilized more people than last week but less than the first rally against the retirement reform two and a half years ago, serve as a reminder of the ongoing tension between the government and the public.
