Labour MP Rushanara Ali Resigns Amidst Rent Increase Controversy
Rushanara Ali, the UK Labour MP and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Homelessness and Rough Sleeping, has resigned after controversy emerged over her actions as a landlord. Ali, who represents the constituency of Bethnal Green and Stepney, raised the rent of her east London townhouse by more than £700 pounds per month, sparking accusations of hypocrisy.
In November 2024, Ali gave four tenants notice that their fixed-term tenancy would not be renewed, as the property was to be sold. Shortly after the tenants vacated, the property was relisted with the monthly rent raised from £3,300 to £4,000. This action has been criticized, particularly since Ali has been an outspoken advocate for renters' protections and has criticized unreasonable rent hikes.
The controversy gained political and public attention amid Labour's upcoming Renters’ Rights Bill, due to become law in 2026. The bill includes provisions banning landlords from evicting tenants in order to sell a property and then re-letting at a higher rent, as well as ending fixed-term tenancies and requiring four months' eviction notice. Critics argue that Ali's actions contradict the reforms she supported.
In her resignation letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Ali maintained that she complied fully with legal requirements and denied wrongdoing. However, she stated that continuing in her ministerial role would distract from government priorities and therefore stepped down. Opposition politicians and housing charities had called for her resignation citing ethical concerns, while some Labour cabinet members publicly defended her compliance with the law. Ali did not refer herself for an investigation by the ministerial standards adviser.
The incident highlights tensions in the UK rental market between landlords' rights and tenant protections, and presents a political challenge to Labour's credibility on housing reform given Ali's prominent role in the homelessness portfolio.
