In 2023, the labor market in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) shows a "robust" growth, despite a slight increase in unemployment. According to the NRW Employment Agency, the state association of business associations, and DGB NRW, the number of registered unemployed people reached about 707,000, accounting for a 7.2% rate. Yet, the number of individuals under social insurance contributions reached a new record high.

Despite the positive development, Roland Schüßler, Employment Agency boss, pinpointed a significant challenge: the lack of qualifications among many jobseekers. Anja Weber, Chairwoman of DGB NRW, also stressed the need to make use of the existing untapped potential by providing opportunities to various groups, including refugees, mini-jobbers, young people, and women. Employer President Arndt Günter Kirchhoff attributes the new employment peak to the commitment of employers in securing jobs, often at the expense of their own reserves, despite the difficult economic conditions.
