La Mirada's Softball Team Powers Up Following a Rocky Initial Inning, Trounces Gahr
In a thrilling display of athletic prowess, the La Mirada Matadores baseball and softball teams took home victories against Gahr High School.
The softball team, currently moving closer to their first Gateway League title, delivered a commanding performance, doubling up Gahr 16-8. The winds reportedly blowing at 15 mph but feeling like 25 mph didn't deter the Matadores. Senior shortstop Amanda Urbina shone in the sixth inning, putting an end to her four for four, five-run performance with a two-run home run. Sophomore Allison Ortega, who collected her sixth win in eight decisions, relieved senior Montserrat Reyes-Cardenas and retired the next 10 batters and 16 of the next 17. Seven La Mirada starters collected at least two hits in the game.
The softball team had previously defeated Gahr 3-1 on March 6, and they repeated their dominance with a monster sixth inning in their latest game. Junior right fielder Bettie Mae Acevedo hit a home run to left center in the fourth inning. The Matadores scored three times in the top of the first inning, despite Gahr sophomore pitcher Isabelle Gonzalez walking three and hitting a batter. Senior center fielder Malaia Huskey brought in two runs for Gahr in the first inning with a single down the third base line, but it wasn't enough to secure a win. Gahr's senior catcher Mya Laroya went two for three with three runs scored and a pair of runs batted in.
The Matadores' baseball team also avenged their previous loss to Gahr, winning 16-8. The team, which boasts a roster consisting of 12 seniors, 5 sophomores, and 3 freshmen, scored three times in the top of the first inning, despite some early struggles from their pitcher. The sophomore Allison Ortega, who also excelled in the baseball game, retired the next 10 batters and 16 of the next 17.
As of the latest official figures, La Mirada leads the Gateway League softball standings with an 8-0 record, while Gahr is winless at 0-0 in league standings.
