LA Mayor Karen Bass Speeds Wildfire Recovery with Executive Order
Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass has swiftly responded to the recent wildfire crisis, outlining an executive order to expedite rebuilding efforts. Since 7 January, over 30 wildfires have devastated the region, leaving many Angelenos homeless. The plan aims to streamline processes and provide temporary accommodation.
The mayor's plan includes waiving environmental reviews like CEQA for building permits, allowing for faster processing of reconstruction applications. Additionally, red tape for eligible projects will be removed to further facilitate rebuilding.
A task force has been deployed to safeguard infrastructure against potential flash floods and mudslides, a common threat following wildfires. To accommodate those displaced, temporary measures such as ADUs, recreational vehicles, tiny homes, modular structures, and mobile homes have been approved for use.
To ensure a smooth clean-up process, a debris manager has been assigned. The organization tasked with debris removal, although not explicitly named, will play a crucial role in the rebuilding initiative.
Mayor Bass's executive order is designed to expedite the rebuilding of homes, businesses, and communities affected by the recent wildfires. By waiving regulatory processes, removing barriers, and implementing temporary accommodation solutions, the city aims to support Angelenos as they recover and rebuild.
