Kyle Stowers from the Marlins attributes his successful season to adopting a relaxed approach
Marlins' Kyle Stowers Sidelined with Oblique Strain
Kyle Stowers, the National League Player of the Month in July 2023, has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a Grade 1 left oblique strain. The injury occurred during a game against the Boston Red Sox on August 16, 2025.
Stowers, who was acquired by the Miami Marlins from the Baltimore Orioles last season, has had a standout season, hitting .288/.368/.544 with 25 home runs in 117 games. His slash line of .186/.262/.295 with two homers in 50 games with the Marlins last season seems a distant memory.
The Marlins' manager, Clayton McCullough, indicated that Stowers will be out for at least several weeks, with an anticipated recovery timeline extending possibly into mid-September 2025. This means Stowers could miss about 3–4 weeks from the IL placement date.
The nature of a Grade 1 left oblique strain requires cautious rest due to the strain location being critical for swinging, throwing, and general movement. As such, a return before mid-September is unlikely.
In Stowers' absence, Marlins outfielders such as Joey Wiemer, Dane Myers, Derek Hill, and Heriberto Hernández are expected to take on increased playing time.
Stowers, who felt pressure to prove himself in the big league, especially with the deep outfield depth chart of the Orioles and the desire to be part of the Marlins' future, has made a big impression on first-year Marlins manager Clayton McCullough. McCullough, who was hired from the Los Angeles Dodgers' coaching staff, considers Stowers to have solid leadership qualities and to impress with his on-field performance.
The Marlins have a record of 59-65 under first-year manager Clayton McCullough, exceeding preseason expectations. Stowers respects McCullough greatly and is happy to be playing for him. In fact, Stowers enjoys having Clayton McCullough as a mentor, who was possibly influenced by great managers like Dave Roberts at the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Despite the potential end to Stowers' season, the Marlins feel good about his potential contributions to their future. Stowers adopted a 'whatever happens' attitude and lessened pressure on himself this year, which has worked for him. This positive attitude, combined with his impressive performance, makes Stowers a valuable asset to the Marlins' future.
