Moscow Digs in: Want Kyiv to Forsake Territories for Permanent Peace

The regions at the crux of this standoff are Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson, with Russian forces in control of significant portions of them. Peskow further stated that the war would cease if Ukraine withdrew its military presence from these regions. "These regions are integral parts of Russia in our constitution," declared Peskow in a chat with the French news journal "Le Point." It's been three years since Russia annexed Crimea, with Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia declared as Russian territories following controversial referendums. Notably, Russia only truly governs Crimea while the other territories remain partially under its control.
"There are still areas in these regions that we regard as occupied by the current Kyiv government," explained Peskov. He questioned what impediments Ukraine faces in militarily relinquishing these four regions and ending the conflict.
