Kyiv receives 1,000 corpses, allegedly of slain Ukrainian soldiers, as claimed by Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for a joint multi-layered European air defense system in response to continued Russian aggression, as talks between the two nations remain gridlocked.
On Thursday, Ukraine received the bodies of 1,000 deceased soldiers from Russia. The latest repatriation was a joint effort involving the Armed Forces, Ukraine's Security Services, the Interior Ministry, and the Red Cross. However, the identification of the repatriated bodies is ongoing, with the Ukrainian coordination centre stating that this process would take place as soon as possible.
While the repatriation of soldiers was one of the few tangible results of the Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul, the negotiations aimed to reach a temporary ceasefire in Putin's invasion of Ukraine, but have stalled. The exchange of prisoners of war has also occurred between Ukraine and Russia, with both countries transferring 146 prisoners of war each in the most recent exchange in August.
Moscow has continued to attack Ukraine, including large strikes, despite the talks. On Thursday, Russian attacks in Kostiantynivka, Donetsk region, resulted in at least five fatalities. Putin used a FAB-250 bomb on a residential area in Kostiantynivka, highlighting the continued disregard for civilian safety.
In previous repatriations, Ukraine has claimed that Russia has handed over bodies of its own soldiers, saying they were Ukrainian. Russian soldiers handed back to Ukraine in June were reportedly found to be Russian, allegedly as an attempt by Moscow to conceal its battlefield losses.
As the conflict continues, President Zelenskyy has emphasised the need for a robust European air defense system to protect Ukraine from further Russian aggression. The talks between Russia and Ukraine remain at an impasse, with US President Donald Trump's ultimatums and deadlines for peace passing without consequence.
