This elderly statesman held the reins of the country since 2006, following a three-year stint as the head honcho of the government. He was the big 'O' ruler in the Arab world.
Rumors of the Emir's demise floated around on social media as early as morning on September 29. However, it wasn't until several hours later that the keen eyes of the state TV crew caught wind of the sad news, interrupting their usual programming with Quran readings before ultimately announcing the leader's expiration.
In July, the Emir graced the halls of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA, in an air-mobile hospital post-op in Kuwait. Some whispered he got a tumor extraction. At that time, his half-brother, Crown Prince Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who's 83 years old, took charge of some of his responsibilities.
Before stepping into the high-ranking positions, Sabah led the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry for four decades. He earned a reputation for tackling regional issues and acting as a peacemaker between Qatar, Iran, and other Persian Gulf countries.
Though the exact reason for his passing isn't clear, it's likely the Emir's health issues contributed to his death. Sabah was succeeded by his half-brother, Crown Prince Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who continued to rule Kuwait until his own death in 2025 at the age of 86.
The Al-Sabah family's succession follows a traditional line, with the position of Emir often being passed to a half-brother or other senior family member. Rest assured, under Nawaf's rule, the leadership of Kuwait remained stable and secure.
