Kuwait Revokes 17 Citizenships Over Dual Nationality

The Supreme Committee for the Investigation of Kuwaiti Nationality has recently revoked the nationality of 17 Kuwaitis. The decision was made in line with Articles 10 and 11 of Amiri Decree No. 15 of 1959 and its subsequent amendments. However, the names and details of those affected remain confidential.

Article 10 of the decree clarifies that a Kuwaiti woman retains her nationality even if she marries a foreigner, unless she chooses to adopt her husband's citizenship. This clause ensures gender equality in nationality laws.

Article 11, on the other hand, states that a Kuwaiti man loses his nationality if he voluntarily acquires the citizenship of another country. This provision aims to prevent dual citizenship, which is not recognised in Kuwait.

The Supreme Committee's decision, following the stipulations of the Amiri Decree, has resulted in the revocation of 17 Kuwaitis' nationality. While the identities of those affected remain private, the move underscores the country's commitment to upholding its citizenship laws.
