Kuwait cracks down on unregulated scooters and bikes with new safety rules

Kuwait is taking steps to regulate the use of bicycles and scooters on its roads. A newly formed committee will draft rules for these micro-mobility vehicles, addressing long-standing safety concerns. The move follows calls from officials to improve traffic management and urban transport options.

Municipal Council member Alia Al-Farsi has welcomed Kuwait Municipality’s decision to establish a committee for overseeing bicycle and scooter use. She highlighted that many residents currently ride without clear regulations, creating potential hazards on the roads.

Al-Farsi stressed the need for collaboration between Kuwait Municipality, the Ministry of Interior, and the Ministry of Public Works. Their joint efforts would focus on designating safe zones for riders and setting up proper controls. She also met with Brigadier General Khaled Al-Adwani to discuss the legal and technical frameworks needed for these vehicles.

Existing traffic laws could be adjusted to include bicycles and scooters, provided the relevant authorities work together effectively. Al-Farsi pointed out that better regulation would not only enhance safety but also ease traffic congestion and improve city-wide connectivity.

The committee’s work will aim to bring structured rules for micro-mobility in Kuwait. Once implemented, the regulations are expected to make roads safer for riders and pedestrians alike. The changes may also contribute to smoother traffic flow and more efficient urban transport.
