Kunsthalle Wien Opens Its Doors for Free on Last Sundays in 2026
Kunsthalle Wien has launched a new initiative to make contemporary art more accessible. Starting in January 2026, visitors can explore its exhibitions for free on the last Sunday of every month. The scheme is supported by a partnership with Dorotheum and aims to attract wider audiences.
The first Free Sunday will take place on January 25, 2026. After that, free admission continues on February 22, March 29, and every last Sunday until December 27, 2026. Both the Museumsquartier and Karlsplatz locations will participate, allowing visitors to see all current exhibitions without charge.
The museum currently features a range of works, from painting and sculpture to digital media. Highlights include a retrospective of US painter Richard Hawkins and a 62-metre-long mural by Sophie von Hellermann. Another key display is a joint show by Jonida Laçi and Luīze Nežberte, winners of the Kunsthalle Wien Prize 2025. The exhibitions tackle urgent social issues while showcasing both established and emerging artists. By removing entry fees on select days, the initiative hopes to encourage more people to engage with contemporary art.
The Free Sundays programme will run throughout 2026, with the next dates already scheduled. Visitors can expect a mix of international and local talent across different artistic mediums. The partnership with Dorotheum ensures that admission remains free on the last Sunday of each month.
