No Progress Yet in Trump's Push for Putin-Zelensky-Trump Summit
Kremlin currently rejects plans for a meeting involving Trump and Zelenskyy.
The Russian government is showing no signs of jumping aboard a tripartite meeting with Putin, Zelensky, and Trump just yet. High-level contacts are good, but Kremlin spokesman Peskov says it's still too early for a direct sit-down.
Trump has been itching for a face-to-face with Putin and Zelensky to end the ongoing Ukraine conflict, which has dragged on for over three years. But Putin's spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, told the Interfax news agency that while Putin is open to high-level talks, he is holding off on a tripartite summit until the technical details are sorted out.
Last week's Russian-Ukrainian talks in Istanbul were dead quiet on producing a breakthrough, according to Peskov. Still, there were some positive strides in humanitarian efforts, with agreements made for another large prisoner exchange and the return of soldiers' remains.
Moscow is waiting for a response from Ukraine regarding the Russian memorandum presented during the Istanbul talks. The document outlines how the Kremlin envisions ending the conflict, with demands ranging from recognition of occupied territories to a complete destruction of the Ukrainian government - demands that have been met with resistance by Ukraine and its international allies.
Peskov emphasized that possible compromises on these demands should be discussed privately, not aired out in the open.
