Kratos Defense teams with SKY Perfect JSAT for 5G satellite ground system

Kratos Defense has partnered with SKY Perfect JSAT to develop a ground system for satellite-based 5G connectivity. Announced on 24 March, the collaboration targets the Asia-Pacific market using Kratos' OpenSpace software. Despite strong financial results, the company's stock fell by up to 7.5% following the news. The project focuses on SKY Perfect JSAT's Universal NTN initiative, which aims to integrate satellite networks with 5G ecosystems. By aligning with 3GPP standards, the system seeks to ensure compatibility with existing mobile infrastructure. However, the partnership remains in an early validation phase, with no confirmed contract values or commercial timelines.

Analysts pointed to Kratos' high price-to-earnings ratio and unclear revenue potential from the deal as reasons for the stock decline. The drop occurred even though the company reported a 9% revenue increase to $303 million in Q1 2025. Currently, shares hover just above the 200-day moving average of around €67. Competition in the sector is growing, as multiple firms demonstrated similar 5G-capable satellite technologies at the recent Satellite 2026 conference. The partnership also supports Kratos' broader strategy of expanding into commercial satellite markets while keeping its defence-sector focus.

The collaboration with SKY Perfect JSAT marks Kratos Defense's push into 5G satellite integration. With no immediate revenue guarantees, investors reacted cautiously, driving the stock downward. The project's success will depend on meeting technical standards and securing future contracts in a competitive market.
