Krasnodar’s City Garden wall collapses after extreme weather and tree roots

A section of retaining wall in Krasnodar's City Garden collapsed on January 16. The incident happened at around 11:00 AM along Suvorov Street. Heavy rain, snow and shifting temperatures were blamed for the damage.

The collapsed wall measured between 20 and 22 metres in length and stood roughly 1.5 metres high. Tree roots spreading beneath the structure also contributed to its failure.

Emergency crews arrived quickly to assess the scene. Three nearby trees risked toppling, so workers trimmed their canopies for safety. By 2:00 PM, all pruning and debris clearance had finished. Deputy Mayor Maksim Onishchenko and other local officials inspected the damage later that day. Plans are now underway to redesign and rebuild the retaining wall.

The collapse disrupted part of the botanical gardens but caused no reported injuries. Repairs will focus on reinforcing the wall against future weather-related stress. Municipal teams will oversee the reconstruction process.
