Krasnaya Polyana shatters March heat record as climate shifts reshape Sochi's winters
Unusually warm weather has broken records in Krasnaya Polyana, with temperatures hitting 19.4°C on March 19. This surpasses the previous high of 19.2°C set in 2018. The region is also bracing for patchy fog and changing conditions over the weekend.
Over the past five years, winters in the Sochi mountains have grown milder, with average temperatures rising by 1–2°C compared to long-term norms. Data from Rosgidromet shows less snowfall and warmer spells, a trend linked to broader climate shifts. This year, March has been particularly warm, with temperatures reaching up to 15°C and reduced snow cover.
Fog is expected to roll into Sochi overnight and linger into the early hours of March 22. Visibility could drop to as low as 500 metres in places, making travel hazardous. Authorities have urged residents and visitors to drive with caution and stay alert in low-visibility conditions. Tomorrow will bring mostly cloudy skies, with daytime highs of 19°C. Mountain areas around Sochi will see temperatures near 10°C, while sea temperatures off the coast hold at 11°C. Rain is then forecast for Monday, with cooler highs of 16°C. In emergencies, the public is reminded to call 112 for immediate assistance.
The record-breaking warmth and shifting weather patterns reflect broader changes in the region's climate. With fog reducing visibility and rain on the way, local services remain on standby to support safety and travel needs.
