"Kovac, BVB's coach, advocates for additional player acquisitions to stay competitive"
Borussia Dortmund Bolster Squad Ahead of New Season
Borussia Dortmund are making strategic moves to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season, with a focus on both attacking options and defensive reinforcements.
Niko Kovac, the club's trainer, has emphasized the team's ambition to secure a place in the Champions League as soon as possible. With the team having barely scraped into the competition as fourth place last season, Kovac is keen to avoid a late comeback scenario.
One of Dortmund's main confirmed and priority targets for the upcoming season signings is Portuguese striker Fábio Silva from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The club sees Silva as a potential backup and long-term successor to their star striker Serhou Guirassy.
Other players linked as potential attacking reinforcements include Jadon Sancho (currently at Manchester United, with Dortmund considering a third spell for him), Brighton's Facundo Buonanotte, and Chelsea’s Carney Chukwuemeka, who is set to join Dortmund permanently for around €20 million plus add-ons.
In addition, Dortmund has been linked with young defenders such as Juan Gimenez and Hector Fort, as well as midfield prospects like Renato Veiga.
The decision on potential transfers will be made "hand in hand" by sporting director Lars Ricken, sporting director Sebastian Kehl, CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, the scouting department, and the coaching team. Kovac acknowledged that the market is not easy, especially with financially strong clubs from the Premier League as competitors, and stated that the team needs to make good decisions to improve their standing in the Champions League.
On the field, Dortmund's opening match in the DFB-Pokal is against Rot-Weiss Essen on Monday, while their Bundesliga season opener is against FC St. Pauli on August 23 at 6:30 PM. Both matches will be broadcast on ARD and Sky.
However, Dortmund will be without Süle in their opening match against St. Pauli.
Carney Chukwuemeka, who was loaned out to FC Chelsea last season, is still in focus for Dortmund, as is Jadon Sancho, a former Dortmund player.
Kovac expressed a desire to secure Dortmund's place in the Champions League earlier in the season, and these strategic moves indicate that the club is taking decisive action to achieve that goal.
Borussia Dortmund aims to bolster their squad with new signings, specifically focusing on attackers like Portuguese striker Fábio Silva and potential reinforcements such as Jadon Sancho and Carney Chukwuemeka. European-leagues seem to be a focus as Juan Gimenez, Hector Fort, and Renato Veiga have also been linked as defensive and midfield prospects.
