Kosteniuk and Kolesov Crowned Russian Chess Champs in Sochi
The Russian Chess Championship in Sochi has concluded with Alexandra Kosteniuk and Gavril Kolesov taking home the women's and men's gold medals respectively. The rapid chess program saw several undefeated players and impressive streaks.
In the men's category, Kolesov dominated, winning the title with an impressive 16 out of 20 points. He defeated six masters of sport and drew with four grandmasters. Nikolai Struchkov claimed the silver medal.
Kolesov, Struchkov, Amrilayev, Shchukin, and Fedurova all remained undefeated in the rapid game. Amrilayev from Bashkortostan finished third on tiebreak. Roman Shchukin from St. Petersburg and Aisen Egorov shared fourth-fifth place with 14 points each.
In the women's event, Sandra Aprosimova won the gold medal with 14 out of 18 points, including a remarkable streak of five consecutive wins. Alexandra Kosteniuk secured the silver medal, while Daiayana Kondratyeva and Tunara Fedurova took home the bronze and silver medals respectively. The Yakutia team performed exceptionally, winning five out of six possible medals in the rapid program.
The Russian Draughts Championship also took place in Sochi, showcasing the country's chess talent. The rapid chess program concluded with impressive performances from both men and women, setting the stage for future competitions.
