Korea's legendary scholar Toegye Yi Hwang relives his final journey in grand re-enactment
A historical re-enactment brought one of Korea's greatest scholars back to life this week. The sixth Re-enactment of Toegye's Final Journey Home opened with a ceremony honouring Yi Hwang, a leading figure of the Joseon era. His legacy remains so influential that his portrait still appears on the 1,000 won banknote today. The event began at Gyeongbok Palace, where actors recreated a key moment from Yi Hwang's life. In the performance, he was shown submitting his resignation petition to King Seonjo, a scene drawn from historical records. Known by his pen name Toegye, Yi Hwang was not only a philosopher but also a devoted teacher who shaped generations of scholars.
The re-enactment is part of a larger celebration of his contributions to Korean thought and education. Organisers chose Gyeongbok Palace for its symbolic ties to the Joseon court, where Yi Hwang once served. His writings and teachings continue to influence modern Korean culture, centuries after his death.
The ceremony marks the start of a series of events honouring Toegye Yi Hwang's life and work. His image on the 1,000 won note serves as a daily reminder of his enduring impact. The re-enactment also highlights the ongoing efforts to preserve and share Korea's rich intellectual heritage.
