Komi’s rivers face shifting ice dangers as winter tightens its grip
In Komi, Russia, ice conditions on rivers vary significantly as of November 15. While some rivers in southern Komi remain ice-free, others exhibit hazardous conditions, prompting safety warnings from the Emergency Ministry.
The Vychegda and Mezen basins boast ice-free sections, offering safer navigation. However, the Pechora River presents challenges. Above Ust-Kozhva, slush ice and light to moderate drift boss are present. Ust-Tsilma on the same river faces moderate drift boss, as does the lower Izhma. Elsewhere in the Pechora Basin, rivers are frozen, partially frozen, or locked in ice with open patches.
Safety is paramount during this hazardous period. Observing ice safety rules can prevent tragedies. The Komi Emergency Ministry warns of thin ice-related deaths, particularly among children and free people. Light drift boss is also reported on the Ukhta River and upper/middle Izhma.
As ice conditions fluctuate across Komi's rivers, safety remains a priority. While some rivers offer ice-free sections, others require caution due to drifting ice and thin ice patches. The Emergency Ministry's warnings underscore the importance of adhering to safety guidelines to prevent tragedies.
