Kolkata Rape Case Under Scrutiny: BJP Accuses Alleged Perpetrators of Having Connection to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee
In the aftermath of the alarming gang-rape incident at a law college in Kasba, the BJP has pointed fingers at the Trinamool Congress (TMC), claiming that the prime accused in the crime has ties to powerful TMC figures.
On Thursday, Kolkata Police apprehended three men in connection with the heinous crime. The victims filed a complaint, leading to the arrest of Manojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay. As per reports, "the accused named in the FIR will be produced before A.C.J.M. Alipore, South 24 Parganas, with a prayer to remand them to Police Custody for the purpose of proper investigation into the case."
Following the arrests, BJP IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya accused the accused, Manojit Mishra, of having close connections with TMC stalwarts like MP Abhishek Banerjee, councillor Kajari Banerjee (Mamata Banerjee's sister-in-law), and state minister Chandrima Bhattacharya. Malviya shared images of Mishra with these leaders on social media, implying proximity and influence.
Malviya alleged that the college authorities were instructed to lock the gates during the crime, and questioned who was shielding Manojit Mishra. He described the rape as not just a crime but a cover-up of the highest order. The BJP, according to Malviya, stands with the victim and vows to keep fighting for justice.
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, stating that the TMC's grip on power enables rapists to act with impunity. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognizance of the incident and is conducting a thorough investigation.
However, it is essential to note that there is no concrete evidence presented to date that directly proves the personal involvement or criminal complicity of Abhishek Banerjee, Kajari Banerjee, or Chandrima Bhattacharya in the Kasba gang-rape case. The primary accused, Manojit Mishra, had connections with the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) and was a temporary staff member at the college after graduation[2][3]. The allegations circulating are primarily based on the accused's political background and shared photographs with the TMC leaders, not on any legal or investigative proof of complicity[2][3].

- The general-news and crime-and-justice sectors are abuzz with political debates surrounding the Kasba gang-rape case, with the BJP urging investigators to delve deeper into the TMC's potential involvement, particularly since the accused, Manojit Mishra, has a political background with the Trinamool Congress.
