"Kokuho" Generates More Than 10 Billion Yen in Box Office Income
In the world of Japanese cinema, a new contender has emerged, breaking a 22-year-old record and making a significant impact on the industry. The movie "Kokuho," distributed by Toho Co., has been captivating audiences since its release.
Ryo Yoshizawa, a renowned Japanese actor, plays the protagonist in this captivating film. The story revolves around the turbulent life of a kabuki actor, offering a glimpse into the dedication and passion required for traditional Japanese performing arts. Director Lee Sang-il masterfully guides the audience through this intricate narrative.
The movie features a stellar cast, with Ryusei Yokohama playing the role of the protagonist's rival. "Kokuho" is an adaptation of Shuichi Yoshida's same-name novel.
The success of "Kokuho" is truly remarkable. Within its first 73 days, the film has earned over 10.5 billion yen in box office revenue in Japan, making it the first live-action Japanese movie to surpass 10 billion yen since "Bayside Shakedown 2" in 2003.
"Kokuho" now holds the title of the third highest-grossing Japanese live-action movie ever, surpassing the box office revenue of the 1983 movie "Antarctica," which grossed 11 billion yen. However, it's important to note that historically, the major Japanese live-action box office successes have been overshadowed by the dominance of anime and foreign movies in Japan's current top 10 highest-grossing films.
Despite this, the performance of "Kokuho" serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of live-action cinema in Japan. While the top earners in Japan's domestic box office in recent years have been anime movies with revenues exceeding 27 billion yen, as demonstrated by the success of Demon Slayer films, "Kokuho" stands as a shining example of the continued potential for live-action films in the Japanese market.
