Kohler Experiences Emotional Roller Coaster at World Championship Exhibition, Finishing in Sixth Place with "Roller Coaster" Performance
Angelina Koehler and Isabel Gose had a rollercoaster week at the Swimming World Championships, with both athletes securing impressive results and near misses.
Koehler defended her 100m butterfly title, finishing fourth in the final, and narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the 50m butterfly final by just seven hundredths of a second. Despite the close calls, Koehler was satisfied with her performance and compared the week to climbing Mount Everest, an emotional rollercoaster.
Koehler also secured the last final spot in the 50m butterfly with a narrow hundredth of a second lead, and set a new German record with a time of 25.50 seconds in the final.
Gose, on the other hand, won gold in the open water relay but did not win any medals in the pool. She considered the World Championships to be instructive for her, and is looking forward to her summer break and starting the new season fresh. Gose's time in the 800m freestyle final was 8:18.23 minutes.
Meanwhile, Lani Pallister finished second in the 800m freestyle final, edging out Summer McIntosh to take silver. Katie Ledecky won the race after overtaking McIntosh, who was leading at 700 meters but faded toward the end. This result continued Ledecky's unbeaten streak in 800m freestyle at major competitions since 2012.
The top 3 swimmers in the women's 800m freestyle were:
- Katie Ledecky (USA) - 8:05.62 (Gold)
- Lani Pallister (Australia) - 8:05.98 (Silver)
- Summer McIntosh (Canada) - 8:07.29 (Bronze)
Lise Seidel finished eighth in the 200m backstroke final, her biggest career race to date. The German 4x100m freestyle mixed relay team finished eighth in an unspecified event.
