Kögel's New Trailer Boosts Payload for Electric Tractor Units

Kögel has launched a new semi-trailer designed specifically for electric tractor units. Called the Kögel Light Plus, it aims to boost payload capacity while keeping within legal weight limits. The trailer's design includes key adjustments to improve efficiency for electric trucks.

The Kögel Light Plus features a shorter distance between the kingpin and the first trailer axle—reduced by 300 millimetres. This change cuts pressure on the tractor unit's drive axle by up to two tonnes. Despite this, the drive axle remains legally capped at 11.5 tonnes for all powertrains.

When paired with an electric tractor unit, the adapted trailer can increase payload capacity by up to four tonnes, depending on the model. EU rules already allow electric trucks to operate at a higher maximum weight of 42 tonnes, compared to 40 tonnes for diesel vehicles. Adding dynamic wheelbase adjustment systems could further boost payload by around one extra tonne.

The trailer's structure also optimises axle load distribution between the truck and trailer. This helps operators avoid exceeding weight restrictions, especially as authorities expand the use of digital weigh-in-motion scales. These scales measure vehicle weights while in motion, making overloading easier to detect.

Demand for heavy-duty electric trucks in Europe is expected to grow. Market share could rise from roughly 3% in 2025 to over 5% in 2026, increasing the need for compatible trailers like the Kögel Light Plus.

The Kögel Light Plus offers a way to maximise payload for electric tractor units while complying with weight regulations. Its design changes and compatibility with dynamic axle systems could make it a key option as electric truck adoption increases. The trailer arrives as stricter enforcement tools, like digital weigh-in-motion scales, become more widespread.
