Kobe Bryant-Michael Jordan trading card currently available for bidding, considered amongst the most expensive ever made
A one-of-a-kind basketball card featuring the images, uniform logos, and autographs of basketball legends Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan is currently up for auction. The card, a 2007 Upper Deck Exquisite Dual Logoman, is valued at a staggering $6.22 million.
The card has been in a private collection for over a decade and is now being offered for sale by an undisclosed seller. The two Kobe Bryant-Michael Jordan cards that have reached values over $6 million since the start of the auction belong to the Heritage Auctions collection. They were sold as a unique card showcasing the iconic duo.
The trend of record sales for sports memorabilia, including the Kobe-Jordan card, began during the pandemic. Notable sales include a rare Honus Wagner T-206 and a Babe Ruth rookie card, both sold for over $7 million in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
Chris Ivy, Heritage's director of sports auctions, believes the Kobe-Jordan card will set a new record as the most expensive modern card ever sold. The card combines the images of the two players, with the NBA logos on the card sourced from jerseys worn during significant seasons. Jordan's logo is from a jersey worn during the 1996-97 championship season, while Bryant's logo is from a jersey worn before his tragic helicopter crash in 2020.
As of Monday morning, there are 38 registered bidders for the Kobe-Jordan card, and the auction is scheduled to end on Saturday night. If sold at its current price, the card will be the 10th most valuable piece of sports memorabilia ever sold, surpassing the value of the Muhammad Ali "Rumble in the Jungle" belt, which was sold for $6.18 million.
The seller of the Kobe-Jordan card has fielded significant private offers but decided to put it up for auction now. People are buying sports memorabilia like the Kobe-Jordan card from a financial perspective, as a way to hedge against inflation. A buyer's premium of $1.12 million will be paid to the auction house.
The most valuable sports card ever gaveled was a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle, which went for $12.6 million three years ago. As the auction for the Kobe-Jordan card comes to a close, sports enthusiasts and collectors alike are eagerly awaiting the final bid.
