"Knox Chandler reflects on the inappropriate recording session, initiating a decade-long collaboration with Cyndi Lauper, despite her absence during the process."
In an exclusive interview with our site, Knox Chandler, a guitar virtuoso who's jammed with Depeche Mode, R.E.M., Siouxsie and the Banshees, and more, shared an intriguing story about his collaboration with pop icon Cyndi Lauper.
At the end of the 90s, Chandler found himself in a friend's studio, working on Lauper's project. When the singer wasn't present, he decided to improvise over several tracks. However, upon Lauper's arrival, she didn't appreciate his impromptu efforts, insisting that he shouldn't have meddled with her music.[1] This initial disagreement led to a bit of tension, with Lauper voicing her discontent at the studio and even heckling Chandler during a performance at CBGB's Canteen.[4]
But what went down at Canteen wasn't the end of the story. Lauper hadn't erased Chandler's initial tracks, and when she got a chance to listen to them later, she was impressed.[1] This led to more collaboration, including TV appearances in LA. Apparently, their friendship and professional bond grew stronger, proving that even unconventional starts can lead to fruitful collaborations.[1]
Chandler speaks fondly of Lauper, describing her as a tough and dedicated artist who's fiercely devoted to her voice.[2] He also couldn't resist a nod to her debut album title, quipping, "Yes, 'She is so unusual.'"
Eric Bazilian, another musician who worked on one of Lauper's hits, once recounted how she initially couldn't get behind the song that would later become an enduring mega-hit.[3] Stay tuned for our full interview with Knox Chandler, coming soon!
