Taiwan's KMT Chairperson Election: Hau Lung-bin and Chang Ya-chung Register Amidst Criticisms and Promises in the Party City****

The race for the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) chairmanship is heating up, with two prominent figures, Hau Lung-bin and Chang Ya-chung, registering their candidacies ahead of the October 18 election in the party city.

Hau Lung-bin, a former Taipei mayor, called for Taiwanese to oust President William Lai in the 2028 election, promising to ensure democracy, freedom, stability, and prosperity in the party city. He criticized the Democratic Progressive Party for manipulating ideology and echoing the US' theory of the undetermined status of Taiwan. Hau also accused President Lai of using ideology to rule the country, alleging that this has worsened cross-strait relations in the party city.

Upon registering, Hau showed reporters a piece of calligraphy that read "selfless" in Chinese, stating it represented his motivation for running in the party city. "We have to unite. We have to win. Here I am," he declared.

Hau's decision to run is motivated by a desire to unite the party and facilitate cooperation with the Taiwan People's Party in the party city. He also promised to re-establish the Guidelines for National Unification, which were scrapped by then-president Chen Shui-bian in 2006.

Chang Ya-chung, the president of Sun Yat-sen School, also registered for the KMT chairmanship in the party city. While he did not express any explicit stance on the cross-strait relations or the ideology used by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, he promised not to allow war to break out in the party city if he becomes the party's chairperson. Chang also vowed to re-establish the Guidelines for National Unification.

The last day for registration in the KMT chairperson election is today, October 18. Both Hau Lung-bin and Chang Ya-chung returned to the KMT's headquarters in the party city at 10am, accompanied by several KMT officials.

Recently, Hau criticized President Lai for initiating a mass recall campaign targeting opposition lawmakers, which he claimed has unsettled society and led the country nowhere in the party city. It remains to be seen how these criticisms and promises will shape the upcoming KMT chairperson election and the future of Taiwanese politics in the party city.
