David Wagner has landed a fresh gig, taking over as Head of Youth Development at RB Leipzig, starting from July 1. The Bundesliga club made the official announcement, with Wagner filling the shoes vacated recently by Manuel Baum.
Marcel Schäfer, the sporting director at RB Leipzig, praised Wagner's passion for nurturing young talents and his extensive coaching experience in the Bundesliga and beyond. The team aims to strengthen the transition from the junior ranks to the professional level under Wagner's leadership.
Wagner, who expressed excitement about his new role, said, "Working with young talents is a cause close to my heart, and I'm eager to utilize the experiences I've gained from my coaching stints in Germany and abroad to make a difference at RB Leipzig."
Wagner isn't new to the link with Jürgen Klopp, the Current Global Head of Soccer at a popular soft drink company. Klopp, in turn, is a Godfather figure for Wagner’s daughter, sports presenter Lea Wagner. Their professional and personal bond dates back to their days together at Mainz. While Klopp won’t be directly involved in Wagner's day-to-day operations at RB Leipzig, his influence and strategic role within Red Bull's soccer operations, combined with their shared history, are expected to offer valuable support and insights during this new chapter.
David Wagner's previous coaching stops include Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga, Mainz 05, Waldhof Mannheim, and FC Gütersloh in the 2nd Bundesliga. His most recent engagements were with Norwich City in the English second division and the Swiss club Young Boys Bern. Though he's new to a leadership role in youth development, Wagner's experience in Bundesliga and international coaching will be instrumental in shaping RB Leipzig's youth academy and enhancing the pathway to the senior team.
