The mercurial football world might have seen Jürgen Klopp stride the German touchline during the Euro 2024 tournament if events had taken a slightly different turn. However, in a heartfelt interview, Klopp revealed that he turned down the chance to coach his home nation in favor of staying loyal to Liverpool, the club he's equally passionate about[1].

"I could've been there," Klopp told "Welt am Sonntag," reminiscing on a season gone by when things were looking grim for Liverpool. The DFB were seeking a new coach in 2023, and Klopp, with his image as a cult trainer, seemed like the perfect fit for the role. But the 58-year-old chose to stick with Liverpool, even when things weren't looking so hot.

"I wasn't ready to leave," said Klopp, emphasizing the bonds he'd built within the Liverpool family. His commitment to the team wasn't just about the job — it was about the people. He wanted to work with his existing team and new players, mend relationships, and bring success to the struggling club[2].

Klopp's decision to stay proved successful, as Liverpool finished third in the Premier League and lifted the League Cup by the end of the 2023-2024 season. In the season that followed his departure, Liverpool clinched the title under new coach Arne Slot. Tragically, however, the German national team bowed out in the quarter-finals of the Euro 2024 tournament against Spain, coached by Julian Nagelsmann[3].

Despite his success with Liverpool, Klopp left the club in January 2025, moving on to a new challenge as Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull. When asked about a possible return to coaching, Klopp responded with a decisive, "No." Though he missed the job, his heart remains with Liverpool[4].

"Klopp was offered the chance to coach the German national team for Euro 2024, but he chose to stay with Liverpool, the club he is equally passionate about."

"Despite leaving Liverpool to become the Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull, Klopp's heart still remains with the Premier League club."
