Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Julia Klöckner Pushes for a Female Federal President after Steinmeier

Klöckner advocates for a future German presidency following Steinmeier's tenure.

Hold onto your hats, folks! The President of the Bundestag, Julia Klöckner, is making waves with her bold proposal—time for a woman to grab the highest state office as the Federal President, following Frank-Walter Steinmeier's tenure. And she's not alone in her crusade.

Klöckner, a CDU politician, points out the blatant inequality in the list of Federal Presidents since 1949, which comprises a dozen dudes with not a single lady. "That's none other than the antithesis of equality," she tells "Stern" magazine. "It's about damn time for normalcy, even in the loftiest state office."

No More Mom's Club in the Halls of Power

Christina Stumpp, the deputy CDU general secretary, has already voiced her support for a woman leading the nation. Klöckner cheers this move, welcoming the coalition partners if they aim to put a woman forward—it's about time for that long-overdue step. As the second-highest state official, presiding over the Bundestag, Klöckner has already made her mark.

Britta Haßelmann, the leader of the Green parliamentary group, is also on board, echoing Klöckner's call for a female Federal President. "Enough with the boys' club in the halls of power!" she exclaims to "Stern". Ain't that the truth? Women make up more than half of the population, but representation in the highest office leaves much to be desired. Each time a "hometown hero" (read: man) is put forward, it's a slap in the face of gender equality. "It's high time to call an end to this nonsense," Haßelmann hammers home.

The Federal Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, is no stranger to criticism when it comes to gender equality in his power circle. "His inner circle's lineup is all boys, and only one woman from the SPD sits in the coalition committee. In this day and age, 2025, for crying out loud!" Haßelmann laments. Steinmeier's second term winds down on March 18, 2027, and he's barred from another stint. Now's the time to shake things up!

The Commission, in the midst of political debates and general news, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation. The call for a female Federal President, backed by Julia Klöckner and other political leaders, is gaining momentum in the halls of power, challenging the traditional lineup of male leaders since 1949.
