Vitali Klitschko, the brawler-turned-politician, step into the spotlight once more as he is selected to receive the Franz-Werfel Human Rights Prize for his endless dedication to freedom, democracy, and human rights, both internally and externally. The Center Against Expulsions, founders of the prestigious award, made the announcement.

"This recognition for Vitali Klitschko sends a message of camaraderie to everyone worldwide hustling for justice and liberty," the jury emphasized. "It's a loud and clear declaration: valor, determination, and compassion should be rewarded, especially during these periods of conflict."

Deciding the Setting

As specified by the Center Against Expulsions, Klitschko will receive the glistening accolade on June 1 in Frankfurt's majestic Paulskirche. German Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) will present the laudation. Alongside him, Hesse's Minister-President Boris Rhein (CDU) is anticipated to grace the occasion, presided over by him.

Born amid the Iron Curtain

Born in the USSR, currently Kyrgyzstan, to Ukrainian parents, Klitschko ascends the boxing ranks as one of the greatest heavyweight champions the world has ever seen. Since 2014, Klitschko has donned the mantle of Mayor of Ukraine's capital, Kyiv.

The Prize

The Franz-Werfel Human Rights Prize, a 10,000-euro award, is bestowed upon individuals, initiatives, or groups every two years, for their efforts in the propagation of human rights, particularly in the face of genocide, expulsion, or the deliberate obliteration of national, ethnic, or religious groups. Past recipients include the Romanian President Klaus Werner Johannis, former German President Joachim Gauck, and Nobel laureate Herta Müller.
