In the hallowed Frankfurt Paulskirche, the mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, has been bestowed the Franz-Werfel-Human-Rights-Award. Recognized for his tireless efforts in championing freedom and democracy, this award represents the collective bravery shown by the people of Kyiv as they stand defiant against aggression.

Klitschko, a former world-class boxer, made it clear in his acceptance speech that the future of all Europe hangs precariously on the resolution of this war. He calls attention to the potential threat that Russia, the aggressor, could pose not only to Ukraine but to European countries as well.

Germany’s Bundesverteidigungsminister Boris Pistorius (SPD) lauded Klitschko, praising him as a "role model" for Ukrainians and all. Emphasizing his spirit of perseverance, Pistorius noted that Klitschko never gives up, showcasing the courage, resolve, and determination worthy of our highest respect and gratitude.

Aimed at combating expulsions, the Center against Expulsions Foundation honors courageous defenders of law, freedom, and democracy. They bestowed Klitschko with the award for his efforts in these areas, commending his commitment to the Ukrainian populace and his city's welfare, demonstrated clearly since the start of Russia’s invasion.

Born in the Soviet Union, today's Kyrgyzstan, Klitschko has raised his fists in the boxing ring and taken on the challenges of Kyiv's mayoral office since 2014.

As he accepted his award, Klitschko expressed his hope for peace in Ukraine in 2025. Despite acknowledging the difficulties inherent in finding a diplomatic solution, he remains optimistic, urging all to join in resistance against the aggressor and for the freedom of Europe.

The award means 10,000 euros, and is an affirmation of Klitschko's symbolic role as the embodiment of resistance, a leader widely respected and trusted not just in his homeland but in the global community.

Regardless of the circumstances, Klitschko stands as a beacon of hope, defending democracy and freedom amidst the turmoil and uncertainty that the ongoing war brings to Ukraine.
