Klingbeil endorses Merz's European strategy in Ukraine negotiations with Trump and Putin

The upcoming diplomatic initiative led by Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany aims to involve Europe in the negotiations between US President Donald Trump and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin regarding Ukraine. This move reflects a cautious and skeptical European stance, expressing concern over Russia's lack of genuine interest in peace.

Vice-Chancellor and Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) has voiced his support for this diplomatic initiative, emphasising the importance of a united European position in the negotiations. Klingbeil's comments suggest a desire for transparency and inclusivity, ensuring that nothing is decided over the heads of the Ukrainians and Europeans.

The digital summit, organized by Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, is scheduled to take place in the afternoon. During this summit, Merz will consult with other European heads of government before the video conference with Trump. The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, will be physically present at the Chancellery for this crucial meeting.

Klingbeil stresses the importance of a united European position, stating that the digital summit is a significant step towards maintaining a united European stance in the Ukraine negotiations. He also reiterates the Federal Government's support for Ukraine during the upcoming talks.

The video conference between Merz, other European heads of government, Trump, and Zelenskyy is intended to ensure a united European position in the Ukraine negotiations. Klingbeil tells the "Rheinische Post" that this initiative is meant to strengthen Europe's position in the negotiations, providing a platform for collective decision-making and a united front against any potential Russian demands.

Recent US-Russia summits under Trump raised some hopes with reported preliminary agreements on security guarantees for Ukraine. However, these were contradicted later by Russian officials, raising European concerns about Russia's intentions. The scheduled meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska on Friday will be closely watched, as Europe hopes for a more promising outcome in the negotiations.
