Kickstarting 2025, Klaipeda Port flaunted a robust surge, recording an impressive growth in cargo handling, with some categories smashing previous records! It's clear as day that the port's clout among Baltic Sea ports is on the upswing, solidifying its position in the region.

As Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipeda State Seaport Authority, put it, "We've stepped into 2025 with a steely resolve – our cargo numbers are soaring, and we're cementing our reputation as a trusted and modern port in the region." The mounting market share and stunning results speak volumes about the effectiveness of their strategic decisions, making it evident that partners are placing their trust in Klaipeda.

Cargo Insights in Klaipeda Port - Q1 2025

In the initial three months of this year, Klaipeda Port managed an impressive 10 million tons of cargo, marking a 15% leap from the same period last year. The forced march forward was evident in containerized cargo, which jumped an unheard-of 33% (+723 thousand tons), establishing a new quarterly record high in the port's container segment. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) also experienced a tremendous 18% growth (100 thousand tons), breaking yet another record.

Other notable growth can be seen in construction materials, minerals (+62% or 228 thousand tons), bulk fertilizers (+92% or 162 thousand tons), and ro-ro cargo (+7% or 109 thousand tons). Oil product handling also showed some gumption, increasing by 7% (66 thousand tons).

Aside from the good news, there were some bumps in the road. Agricultural product handling (–19%), forestry products (–10%), and liquid fertilizers (–81%) saw a downturn, while railway (–4%) and ship repair (–2) also experienced a dip.

Klaipeda Port's Heavy Hitters in Q1 2025

The overall cargo volume in the Baltic States ports swelled by 4% (840k tons) in Q1 2025. Klaipeda Port more than held its own, capturing nearly 41% of the market share among Baltic ports – a impressive 4 percentage point increase from the previous year – while Riga and Tallinn ports saw their shares slip to 18.3% and 14%, respectively.

While Klaipeda snatched some limelight, a few other ports experienced a sliding dip in throughput. Riga, Latvia's largest port, took a nosedive, losing nearly 360 thousand tons (8%) compared to the same period last year. The most significant drops were observed in grain, containerized cargo, and metals. All in all, 4.4 million tons were handled there in Q1 2025.

Liepaja, another Latvian port, followed suit, dropping 350 thousand tons (18%) with reduced volumes of grain, timber, and ro-ro cargo. The final tally for Liepaja stood at roughly 1.6 million tons managed during the first quarter.

Ventspils, the only Latvian port to record positive growth, saw an increase of 35 thousand tons (1%) due to expanded handling of oil products and ro-ro cargo. Almost 2.4 million tons were processed there during the period.
