KitKat's 400,000-bar heist sparks online tracker for stolen chocolate
A massive heist saw over 400,000 KitKat bars stolen from a delivery truck travelling between Italy and Poland. The incident sparked widespread attention, including jokes online and worries about chocolate shortages before Easter. Now, the brand has launched an online tool to help customers check if their KitKat might be part of the stolen batch.
The theft took place during transit, with 413,793 KitKat bars disappearing from a lorry en route from Italy to Poland. The unusual nature of the crime quickly went viral, fuelled by memes and speculation about the missing chocolate.
In response, Nestlé introduced an online tracker. Customers can enter an 8-digit batch code found on the back of each KitKat wrapper to see if their bar was part of the stolen shipment. However, doubts remain about how reliable the tracker's results actually are. Despite the heist, Nestlé has reassured the public that the chocolate supply chain remains unaffected. There are no expected shortages, even with Easter approaching.
The stolen KitKats have yet to be recovered, but the new tracking tool offers a way for buyers to verify their purchases. Authorities and Nestlé continue to investigate the theft, while the company insists production and distribution remain on schedule.
