In an exciting development for period drama enthusiasts, MGM+ and the BBC have acquired the rights to adapt Charles Dickens' classic novel, "A Tale of Two Cities." The four-part series, set to air next year, will be created and written by Daniel West and directed by Hong Khaou.

The story revolves around Lucie Manette, a young woman who receives a message from Paris about her father, who has been presumed dead for almost 20 years. Lucie enlists the help of a brilliant but erratic young lawyer, Sydney Carton, to free her father's messenger, Charles Darnay, who is arrested and charged with treason.

The adaptation promises to be a twisting period thriller with a contemporary, volatile love triangle at its heart. Kit Harington, Francois Civil, and Mirren Mack will star in the series, with Harington and West serving as executive producers for Thriker Films.

Leo Becker is the executive producer for Federation Studio France, while the executive producers for Federation Stories are Polly Williams and Sarah Best. The series is based on the iconic Dickens novel set in London, 1782, and is one of the author's best works, considered one of the best of the 19th century.

Interestingly, "A Tale of Two Cities" has a rich history in film adaptations. The German version of the novel was produced by UFA (Universum Film-Aktiengesellschaft) in Germany, directed by Danish filmmaker Holger-Madsen, and premiered in Austria in December 1923.

Meanwhile, Federation Studios has been busy adapting older novels, including "Around the World in 80 Days" and "Gulliver's Travels." With eight to 10 international co-productions in the works, it seems the studio is committed to bringing more classic literature to the small screen.

MGM+ is seeking to bring "A Tale of Two Cities" to their viewers, promising an exciting and faithful adaptation of the beloved novel. Simon Meyers is the producer for the show, ensuring a meticulous and engaging production. As production progresses, anticipation for this adaptation continues to grow.
