Amps up and let's shred, folks! Legendary axe-wielder Kirk Hammett of Metallica fame has been offloading a portion of his precious guitar collection in a clandestine fashion. He's stealthily selling bundles of his six-strings anonymously on popular platforms like eBay and Reverb, surprising the world of guitar enthusiasts. But what exactly has been auctioned off remains under wraps, as Hammett prefers to stay mum on the details.

Hammett spoke candidly with Metal Hammer about his burning need to lighten his massive guitar collection. He's been feeling the pressure of owning an overwhelming number of guitars and confessed his anxiety about them being confined to storage. "I don't believe in just hoarding them away and forgetting about them," he explained. The man behind some of the fiercest guitar solos in rock history has a soft spot for his guitars being played, not gathering dust in silence.

Kirk's impressive collection boasts some true heavy metal holy grails, like Peter Green's "Greeny" Les Paul and an ultra-rare 1959 ES-335, which he believes to be his best-sounding coup. Yet, some of his less-frequently played guitars, which had been collecting dust since the late 2000s, found their way onto the auction block. As for the specific guitars that went under the virtual hammer, Hammett kept tight-lipped.

This unconventional method of selling guitars is quite a departure from the norm, especially for a big-name player like Hammett. Intriguingly, he prefers trading his guitars off or simply giving them away rather than doing a straightforward cash deal, ensuring everyone walks away feeling like a winner. This philanthropic approach to guitar trading is similarly shared by fellow shredder of the six-strings, Joe Bonamassa. Bonamassa once helped Hammett snag another rare Les Paul he had been chasing for years - all in a little swap involving one of his prized Dumble amps.

So, while Kirk Hammett's exact list of sold guitars remains a mystery, it's safe to assume that some of his less-frequently played axes from the Death Magnetic era have found new homes, having not seen daylight in over 15 years.

As for Hammett's 100+ guitar collection, he dropped a bombshell earlier this year revealing why there are no PRS guitars among them. Surprisingly, a signature Triplecaster from Jack White can be found in that expansive collection, following a high-profile guitar swap between the two rockers. So, while Hammett's collection may have been whittled down, it still remains a veritable smorgasbord of legendary electric guitars. Rock on, Kirk!
