Charles III: 10 Things You Didn't Know About the British King - King Charles III’s 70-Year Wait Ends as a Scholar and Patron of the Arts

King Charles III, born Charles Philip Arthur George, has ascended the throne following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Born in 1948, he became heir apparent at the age of three and held this position for an unprecedented 70 years before becoming king at 73.

Charles' education began at home, but he later attended Gordonstoun boarding school, where he faced bullying. Despite this, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in history from Cambridge in 1970 and a master’s degree in 1975, becoming the first British heir to achieve such academic milestones.

The king-to-be had a varied career before his ascension. He made cameo appearances in popular TV shows like Coronation Street and Doctor Who, expressing his fandom of the latter series to actor Matt Smith. Charles also pursued artistic talents, writing a children’s book, The Old Man of Lochnagar, and mastering multiple musical instruments, including the cello, trumpet, and guitar, as well as singing in choirs. His interest in the arts led him to revive the tradition of having an official court harpist in 2000 and exhibit his paintings at Windsor Castle and the Royal Academy.

Charles' environmental consciousness is evident in his choice of transportation. He drives an Aston Martin powered by bioethanol from wine and uses biodiesel made from recycled cooking oil for other royal vehicles. This commitment to sustainability is one of many examples of his dedication to causes beyond the monarchy.

Charles' journey to the throne is marked by personal growth, academic achievement, and a commitment to various causes. As King Charles III, he continues to uphold traditions while also making his mark through his environmental initiatives and support for the arts. His 70-year wait as heir apparent is a testament to his patience and dedication to the crown.
