German football star Joshua Kimmich, captain of Bayern Munich, appears less than enthused heading into their first match of the Club World Cup. The atmosphere, he notes, isn't on par with what he's used to at international tournaments. The buzz and anticipation? Not so much.
Bayern Munich's very own Joshua Kimmich has expressed reservations about the excitement surrounding the Club World Cup taking place in the U.S.A. "Don't seem to catch that euphoria, do you?" said the professional footballer ahead of their encounter with Auckland City in Cincinnati (18:00 CEST, DAZN, Sat.1, and ntv.de live ticker). "People here are really into sports," he added, "but of course, there are other sports vying for attention."
Ticket sales for the 32-team tournament, a first for FIFA, have been sluggish. With just days to go, FIFA cut ticket prices significantly and even distributed freebies to fill the stadiums. Plenty of tickets remained available for the Munich game in Cincinnati on the FIFA ticket portal the day before.

Kimmich noted a bit more media coverage compared to a World Cup with national teams. "Feels a bit different," he admitted, but maintained his enthusiasm for the tournament. He warned against underestimating Auckland, the lone amateur team in the competition. "We've lost too many games against lesser opponents," said the 30-year-old. "So we should be on our guard."
Coach Vincent Kompany shared Kimmich's sentiment, expressing respect for the Kiwi underdogs. "It's tough to compare the levels of the leagues," said the Belgian coach. "But even being an amateur team doesn't mean they can't have their moments. We've prepared for this game just like any other."
It's possible that the overall lack of enthusiasm for the tournament stems from various factors, such as overlapping events, high ticket prices, visa delays, travel restrictions, format changes, and controversy. While Kimmich didn't comment specifically on these issues, they could collectively explain the observed lack of excitement.

The Commission has also been consulted on the draft budget for the financial year, considering the sluggish ticket sales and potential challenges faced by the Club World Cup 2025, which may require additional funds. Joshua Kimmich, captain of FC Bayern Munich, expressed a sense of sports-analysis, noting the lower-than-expected excitement surrounding the tournament, partly due to competition from other sports.
