Kim Cattrall rejected the role in Sex and the City four times before eventually accepting it, but the reasons behind her multiple refusals remain unclear.

In a chat with The Times, Kim Cattrall spilled the beans about her initial reluctance to play Samantha Jones on Sex and the City – a role she'd later become synonymous with. Cattrall admitted that her self-imposed "ageism" held her back, as taking on such a sexually liberated character in her mid-40s gave her pause.

As time went by, her perspective shifted, acknowledging, "40 became sexy. It became, 'Man, let's have more of that.'"

Delving into what made Samantha such a standout character, Cattrall remarked, "She wasn't a nymphomaniac – well, some might've thought so – but she was just savoring the main course. Everyone else was nibbling on appetizers while she was going for the steak." And guess who insisted on those terms? Yep, that was Cattrall.

Interestingly, the actress admits she's much different from her on-screen persona. "I'm the antithesis of her in many ways. I'm a serial monogamist, and then some." Despite the differences, Cattrall cherishes the role, "I created a character that I loved, and if I'm remembered only for that, then that's really OK."

Inspired by Candace Bushnell's column for The New York Observer, Sex and the City debuted on HBO in 1998 and ran for six seasons, with two feature films in 2008 and 2010, a prequel series, The Carrie Diaries, in 2013-2014, and a revival series, And Just Like That..., in 2021. Sticking to tradition, season 3 premiered on May 29.

Although Cattrall decided against returning as a full-time cast member in the revival series due to off-screen tensions with Sarah Jessica Parker, she made a brief, impactful appearance in the Season 2 finale.

  1. Kim Cattrall's character, Samantha Jones, made a significant impact in the world of entertainment and movies-and-tv, with her bold portrayal of a sexually liberated woman resonating globally.
  2. Contrary to her on-screen persona, Cattrall is a serial monogamist and finds herself different from Samantha in many ways.
  3. Despite certain challenges and off-screen tensions, Cattrall remains fond of her role in Sex and the City and is content with being remembered for creating a beloved character.
