Update on Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano: Lava Fountains Reach Record Heights

The ongoing eruption at Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii saw dazzling lava fountains reach impressive heights of up to 1,000 feet over the weekend. The volcanic activity occurred in the Halemaʻumaʻu crater within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Located along the southeastern shore of Hawaii Island, Kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanoes. The volcano has been intermittently erupting since December 23, 2024. This latest eruption episode, known as Episode 23, began late last week with low-level spattering and flames.

According to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, small lava fountains and overflows from the north vent started around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. By Sunday afternoon, the south vent reached lava fountains of 230 feet, while the north vent soared to 1,000 feet.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that Kilauea is currently in a unique phase of activity with numerous episodes of dual lava fountains since the eruption began. The active vents, located in the southwest part of the caldera, have been intermittently producing new lava flows over parts of Halemaʻumaʻu crater surface.

Since the eruption began, there have been 23 discrete eruptive episodes separated by pauses. After each episode, the volcano exhibits summit inflation, indicating magma is still close to the surface and primed for the next eruption episode. The current alert level is WATCH with an aviation color code of ORANGE.

As pressure building beneath the surface causes inflationary tilt prior to a lava fountaining episode, the summit undergoes a switch to a deflationary tilt once lava fountaining begins. This pattern of inflation and deflation with each recent lava fountain episode creates a saw-tooth pattern in ground tilt records.

Currently, all activity remains confined within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, with no significant eruptive activity detected along the East Rift Zone or Southwest Rift Zone of Kilauea. Hazards include volcanic gas emissions and windblown volcanic glass (Pele’s hair) and tephra, impacting the park and nearby communities.

As the halting Kilauea eruption continues, experts closely monitor the volcano, with ongoing summit inflation indicating potential for further activity within days.
