Kiev's involvement is crucial for any negotiations on Ukraine, according to Merz's statement.

Following the recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Ukraine's involvement in future talks remains uncertain and complicated by conflicting signals, particularly from Russia.

Trump expressed optimism about arranging a bilateral meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin and committed to helping with security guarantees for Ukraine. However, Russia has not confirmed any such meeting and insists on having a direct role in discussions about Ukraine’s security, limiting meaningful progress.

Key points about Ukraine's status in these talks:

  • President Zelenskyy agrees to negotiations but insists Ukraine must decide on its own territorial issues, refusing any concessions that violate Ukraine’s constitution, especially regarding the Donbas region.
  • Russia rejects direct talks with Ukraine unless Moscow has a veto role in security guarantees, reflecting Moscow's unwillingness to compromise without military leverage.
  • Despite Trump's efforts, a clear summit between Putin and Zelenskyy has not been confirmed, and Russian officials have downplayed the prospects, while recent Russian missile attacks indicate continuing hostility.
  • Trump’s role is mostly to facilitate potential meetings, but Moscow remains skeptical and demands security discussions include Russia directly, complicating Ukraine's direct involvement in future talks.

In an effort to ensure Ukraine's voice is heard, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for Ukraine's involvement in future negotiations following the summit between Trump and Putin in Alaska. Merz invited video conferences to discuss the Ukraine conflict and emphasized the need for robust security guarantees for Ukraine, stating that they should be "part of a joint transatlantic strategy."

Ukraine is formally involved and willing to engage but faces strong opposition from Russia on terms and direct negotiations, with no firm agreement yet established for future peace talks after the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska. To address this, a conference of the "Coalition of the Willing" is planned, hosted by Germany, Britain, and France, with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also scheduled to participate.

Merz expressed concern about decisions being made over Ukraine and its Western allies without their involvement. He also demanded a ceasefire in the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the beginning of negotiations. Ukraine, for its part, is ready for negotiations on territorial questions, but the so-called contact line should be the starting point.

Trump had previously suggested a "land swap" between Russia and Ukraine, a proposal that has not been officially confirmed or rejected by either party. As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these talks will unfold and what implications they may have for Ukraine's future.
