British Sailors Shine Brilliantly at Kiel Week as Kohlhoff Joins Elite SailGP Team
Kiel Week: British Crews Lead the Pack - Kiel Week: British crews assert authority on the seas
Get your sails ready, folks! The 131st Kiel Week is in full swing, and the British boats are currently steering the show. Having clinched the World Championship bronze medal in the 470 Mixed, Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris are leading the pack. The Spanish champions, Jordi Xammar and Marta Cardona, are trailing in seventh place after four races. The highest-ranking German team, Theresa Loeffler and Christopher Hoerr (Lausanne/Röthenbach), are holding down fourth place.
In the Nacra 17, it's a British duo, John Gimson and Ana Burnett, who have conquered the seas after winning four daily triumphs in six races. Unfortunately, Germany is without a top-notch team in this boat class after the retirement of Paul Kohlhoff and Alica Stuhlemmer (Kiel Yacht Club).
New Horizons for Kohlhoff
Kohlhoff, who brought home a bronze medal from the 2021 Olympics, is set to embark on a new voyage. He will be joining forces with the Germany SailGP Team led by entrepreneur Thomas Riedel and four-time Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel. The 30-year-old Kohlhoff is preparing for the debut of the German SailGP Team in the sailing Formula 1 on August 16/17 in Sassnitz on Rügen.
Kohlhoff, who has sailed in the Olympics three times, doesn't have a fixed position within the sailing team yet. "The team will decide in which role I can best contribute. I want to help and look forward to being just a small cog in this impressive machine," said Kohlhoff.
