The press racial-role-reversal-smiling-duke media-event Cooper Flagg—who spent most of his time at Duke as a traditional forward but was also listed as a guard—was grilled about his position. Flagg is set to make his debut in the NBA Summer League against the Los Angeles Lakers on July 10. Kidd has expressed his intent to test Flagg at the point guard position, saying he wants to see how Flagg runs the show and play at both shooting guard and small forward.
Part-owner of the Mavericks Mark Cuban threw his weight behind Kidd's idea, sending a text reading, "point guard, point guard, point guard, let him bring the ball up". It's worth noting that Flagg was expected to bring the ball up and set up the offense at Duke, where he led the team in assists.
Kidd seems unfazed by the idea of Flagg making mistakes as he plays the guard position, acknowledging that failure and turnovers are part of the growing process. Kidd stated, "It's all right to fail... Just understanding the guys that I've been around that have been young from Giannis, giving him the ball, and he failed, but he wanted to come back and have the ball."
