Kickoff of the UEFA Champions League for Bayern Munich
The THW (Technisches Hilfswerk), a federally organized deployment organisation with around 88,000 volunteers nationwide, is gearing up for a significant role in the upcoming UEFA European Football Championship 2024, taking place from June 14 to July 14, 2024, in Munich.
The opening match of the tournament will be held in Munich, and the THW Bayern will be extensively deployed during the championship. The THW's commitment extends beyond Germany, and they will be providing specialist advice, logistics, and catering during the event.
Up to 200 THW personnel will be deployed in Munich at peak times, with six matches being played in the city. Twenty local units from North and South Bavaria will actively participate on all matchdays.
The THW's work in civil protection is based on the engagement of its volunteers, and they provide a wide range of competencies, including specialist expertise, technology, and experience. Four THW specialist advisors from Bavaria and eleven members of the Virtual Operations Support Team (VOST) will support the International Police Coordination Center (IPCC) in North Rhine-Westphalia during the European Championship on a 24-hour basis. The VOST of the THW observes the situation on the internet and social media and prepares this information for deployment planning.
Carrier teams, each consisting of four people, will be present in the Munich football arena to rescue injured persons from the steep stands of the stadium in the shortest possible time. In addition, up to 70 ambulance vehicles with medical personnel are on standby at a THW-set-up standby room, ready to quickly deploy to the stadium in case of an emergency.
The THW's work extends beyond Germany, including bilateral aid and international missions. They are in demand worldwide for civil protection tasks by the federal government, EU civil protection mechanism, and UN organizations. For more information about the THW's work, visit www.jetzt.thw.de.
