Kickoff of European Championship for Bayern

The THW (Technisches Hilfswerk), a federal operational organization composed of volunteers, is set to make an important contribution to the safety and smooth running of the UEFA European Football Championship in Munich, Germany, from June 14 to July 14, 2024.

Hundreds of deployment forces from the fire service and medical services will be supplied by the THW Landesverband Bayern, the local branch of the THW in Bavaria. At peak times, around 200 THW personnel will be deployed in Munich, taking on tasks in logistics, providing specialist advice, and setting up carrier teams in the Munich football arena.

Each carrier team consists of four persons and will be directly present in the stadium to enable quick rescue of injured persons from the steep stands. Up to 70 ambulance vehicles with medical personnel are on standby to quickly deploy to the stadium in case of an emergency.

The THW's commitment extends beyond Germany, providing aid both domestically and internationally. In addition to bilateral aid, the THW also performs technical and logistical tasks within the EU's civil protection mechanism and for UN organizations.

Four THW specialist advisors from Bavaria and eleven members of the Virtual Operations Support Team (VOST) will support the International Police Coordination Center (IPCC) in North Rhine-Westphalia during the European Championship on a 24/7 basis. The VOST of the THW consists of experts who observe the situation on the internet and social media and prepare this information for deployment planning.

The THW is in demand worldwide by the federal government for crisis management. For more information about the THW's work, visit www.jetzt.thw.de. For inquiries, contact the THW Landesverband Bayern at (089) 15 91 51-0 or [email protected].

Six matches will be played in Munich, and 20 local units from North and South Bavaria will be active on all matchdays. The THW Landesverband Bayern's website is located at: https://www.thw.de/DE/THW/Organisation/Bundesanstalt/Landesverbaende/BY/by_node.html

The opening match of the tournament will take place in Munich on June 14. The THW will provide crucial support to ensure the safety and success of this major sporting event.
