Title: Barthel Apologizes for Controversial Remarks About Union Berlin's Assistant Coach
In an attempt to clarify his stance following a week of backlash, advisor Maik Barthel has apologized for his comments about Union Berlin's assistant coach, Marie-Louise Eta. The controversy arose after Barthel's criticism of Union Berlin's transfer policy, which for some, mistakenly targeted Eta (Kicker, 2022).
Barthel, known for his work with prominent player Kevin Schade, admitted that his words, though not intentionally, came off as disrespectful towards Eta. Recognizing the inappropriateness of his choice of words, Barthel expressed regret for any offense caused. "My tweet was unsuccessful, and my criticism was solely aimed at Union Berlin's transfer policy, not about Ms. Eta," Barthel clarified (Kicker, 2022).
The initial comment, which garnered criticism as sexist, ultimately led to Schade, Barthel's most prominent player, parting ways with his advisor. Schade explained his decision to FC Brentford's pay-TV broadcaster Sky, stating that he does not share Barthel's views and cannot align himself with such ideas (Kicker, 2022).
Despite the controversy, it's worth noting that Eta has continued to significantly contribute to Union Berlin's soccer operations. The criticisms surrounding his comments did not involve Eta, the team's soccer coach, underscoring her professional abilities and commitment to the team (Kicker, 2022).
